It's happy food around here. Food that provides both nourishment and flavor, positive intentions, as well as a bit of fun, too. And when smaller hands are involved, food takes on a whimsical spin.
A recent meal reminded me of the transformative magic of dumplings: buttery morsels of heaven. Basking atop homemade soup, their simple fusion of flour, liquid, and heat elevate even the simplest meal to something more heart-warming. My favorite part? They are one of those kitchen creations that seem a little like magic. You mix together basic ingredients, roll them into little dough balls, rest them atop your soup, close the cover, and they plump to perfection.
Simply Magic Dumplings
-
2 C. all-purpose flour
-
1 T. baking powder
-
1 tsp. salt
-
3 T. butter
-
1 C. milk
-
Simmering Soup (of course, Chicken Soup is the standard here but dumplings can grace even the simplest vegetable stew)
Melt the milk and butter together in a saucepan over low heat until the butter is melted. Take off the heat. Mix together the dry ingredients and add the butter/milk mixture. Stir with a fork and then knead a couple times with your hands. Divide the dough into 1" diameter portions and roll gently into balls. Nestle the dumplings atop simmering soup, cover, and wait 10 minutes. Open the lid and voila! Serve immediately.
